Novinger Tournament Final Night Results

After weather postponed play at the Novinger tournament Saturday, play resumed Wednesday with boys and girls 3rd and 1st place games.

The girls title game featured a pair of underdogs. LaPlata had knocked off top seeded Novinger on their way to the 1st place game, and Brashear had defeated 2nd seeded Scotland County. Brashear took the lead early on and was up 12-6 after one period of play and went into halftime with an 18-14 lead. LaPlata closed the gap and only trailed 24-23 at the end of the third quarter, then briefly took the lead midway through the 4th quarter. Brashear helped themselves from the charity stripe with 7 free-throw points in the 4th quarter to seal the 39-32 win. Hailee Kelsey and Christina Scudder both had double-doubles for Brashear with Kelsey scoring 13 and Scudder scoring 10. Emily Ladwig had 6, and Jessi Hill and Caroline Slavin each had 5 points. For LaPlata, Justine Bane and Kelcey Williams each had 10, Emily Snodgrass and Shelby Waddle had 3 each and Lindsey Kimmel, Lindsey Barnes, and Laura Tuggle scored 2 points each.

In the boys' contest, Brashear was the underdog to a LaPlata team that took 3rd in the state last year. LaPlata jumped out to an 18-9 lead after the 1st quarter, but Brashear battled back to tie the score 22 all at the half. LaPlata ran up a 37-26 lead again in the 3rd quarter, but Brashear battled back in the 4th and trailed by only 6 points with a minute left in the game. Brashear's attempts to foul to get the ball back only allowed LaPlata to extend their lead on free throws and LaPlata held on to win 55-42. Justin Hazen led Brashear with 9 points, Jacob Shipman and Kale Watson each added 7, Matt Thomas and Trae Treasure had 6 each, and Ryan Ferdig scored 3 points. For LaPlata, Dusty Baker had 18, Jesse Schrader added 17, Jordan Smith and Taylor Wheeler had 6 each, and Curtiss Bunch and Mike Eitel scored 4 points each.
